TORLAK Familiy
Written records of the TORLAK Family date back to around two hundred fifty years and reflect that the interest of the family rested mainly in shipping activities around Rize, a coastal city on the easternmost part of the Blacksea. While some members of the family engaged in sea transportation using wooden barges, the others involved in building them. As the result of these maritime activities, part of the family moved to Istanbul, then the Capital of the Empire. Marango Mustafa TORLAK, grand grandfather of Mr. Kenan TORLAK become a pioneer to settle the family into ship building business around Unkapani - Eyup region of the Golden Horn in the late 1800's in that glorious city. Mr. Durmus Ali TORLAK, grandfather of Mr. Kenan TORLAK moved to Istanbul in his 8 years of age and concurrent with his education become involved in commercial activities such as ship wrecking and building. Mr. Kenan TORLAK as a child started assisting his father Mustafa TORLAK and uncle Mahmut TORLAK in the shipyard around Balat, later followed by his younger brothers. The family continued in the shipbuilding business until early 1980's when the Government forced all the private shipyards out of the Bosporus and the Golden Horn to a newly established shipbuilding complex in Tuzla, Istanbul. TORGEM Shipyard was established concurrent with the relocation, and would be the mainmast of shipbuilding activities of the TORLAK family, namely Mr. Kenan TORLAK and his brothers. His two sons; Mustafa Kemal TORLAK and Ugur TORLAK decided and succeeded to follow the mainstream of the family and both graduated as Naval Architects from Newcastle, UK.

TOR Group of Companies

Having succeeded in shipbuilding industry, TORLAK Family decided to enlarge her commercial and industrial base to peripheral areas of shipbuilding, such as shipping, wholesale of consumables, tourism and IT activities. As the result, new companies emerged within the Group. TOR Turizm A. S. (Maintur), TORSAN A. S., TORPAZ A. S. (Chocolate IT Solutions) and TORHAN A. S. are members of the TOR Group. With these newly established companies, the TOR Group is actively involved in steel construction works within civil engineering and building projects, wholesale of shipbuilding consumables (grinding, cutting and abrasive wheels under SUNDİSC Trademark, protective gear, etc.), tourism activities (cruises, private tours, incoming, hosting and ticketing), IT products such as WEB site, printed advertorial materials, etc. and shipping management operations.

TORGEM Shipyard

TORGEM as an entity with this commercial title is only 27 years old, however; the shipyard itself is owned and operated by the TORLAK family since more than hundred years. Present executive team consists of naval architects from the family; which are representing the fifth generation of the TORLAK Family engaged in shipbuilding industry.

TORGEM Gemi Inşaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A. S., located in Tersaneler Bolgesi Tuzla 34940 Istanbul Turkey, is a commercial entity presently engaged in shipbuilding and repair industry, within TOR Group of Companies. Established in 1977, TORGEM Gemi Insaat ve Sanayi A. S. gained remarkable experience and upgraded its technology in ship building between 1977-1982, which was a period of rapid growth and development for the Turkish shipbuilding industry. With this industrial base, the Shipyard was transferred from Golden Horn to Tuzla Bay in 1983. Since then, TORGEM Shipyard constructed and delivered 69 new building projects. The 54th ship built; 12.500 DWT multi-purpose container vessel -M/V "MEHMET KALKAVAN- was the biggest vessel ever constructed and delivered by a private shipyard in Turkey. More recently, M/V EYLUL K delivered in 2006 was the biggest dry cargo vessel ever built in a Turkish private shipyard.

HYPERLINK "javascript:picP2()"Over the years, TORGEM Shipyard has mounted enough experience and completely upgraded its technology and infrastructure to handle new building of all types of vessels, including; multipurpose container carriers, bulk carriers, tugboats and motoryachts in addition to repairs and conversions, annual surveys, machinery overhauls and steel work renewals of all kinds. Presently, the newbuilding capacity of the yard is to deliver a single order of a 900 TEU Container Carrier in 12 months and a sister ship order to follow in every 4 months.

TORGEM Shipyard Capabilities

TORGEM Shipyard is located on 40 acres of area of which 17 acres are covered. TORGEM has two slipways with dimensions of 24.5x165 and 17x110 meters. With her steel processing capacity of 10.000 tons steel annually, TORGEM can build three ships per year with various tonnage and dimensions. More specifically; TORGEM can build;

Any type of chemical/product tankers, dry or general cargo vessels and container carriers up to 24.000 DWT,
Motoryachts, naval vessels and platforms of steel or aluminum structures up to 170 meters,
Any types of tugboats, boats and offshore vessels,
Construction and erection of land steel building structures and platforms of any size.

TORGEM Shipyard at present is undertaking a major investment and upgrade of her infrastructure. As part of this investment project, TORGEM Board of Directors has decided the procurement of a Panamax size floating dock of 20.000 Tons Total Lifting Capacity (TLC).

Management Structure

The organization of TORGEM is a "simple" function-based management structure which obtains the optimum utilization of the existing resources under the variable market conditions.

On this model, basic design, production and quality assurance management system activities can be realized by total quality assurances provided by ERP programs utilized by experienced engineers and dedicated workforce of the shipyard.

Quality Assurance Management Systems

TORGEM Shipyard; as a result of continuing progress and investment policies pursued, has taken a very dominant stand in Turkish Shipbuilding Industry. The Shipyard is at present one of the major competitors between Turkish Shipyards, both in new building projects and ship repairs including all kinds of steel works. These achievements equally result in more orders coming everyday from international ship owners.
The most recent achievement of TORGEM Shipyard is the certification of the universal quality standards both in production and project management. In this context, TORGEM Shipyard has been awarded by the authorized bodies the certificates below:

By the Ministry of National Defense; "Complies with AQAP-120 requirements for Building, Maintenance and Repairing of Ships, Boats, Yachts, Floating Docks" in the military shipbuilding field, and;

By the Turkish Lloyd; "Has implemented and operates a Quality Management System -ISO 9001:2000 for Shipbuilding, Ship Repair and all Kinds of Floating Platform Building and Repair".
